LONDON, April 4 — Chelsea moved up to fourth in the Premier League as Enzo Fernandez’s decisive goal secured a 1-0 victory over struggling Tottenham, intensifying the pressure on Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.
Fernandez powered home a header early in the second half to settle a fiercely contested London derby at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had temporarily dropped to sixth after wins by Manchester City and Newcastle, but this victory pushed them one point ahead of City and two clear of Newcastle in the race for Champions League qualification.
While the top four are guaranteed Champions League spots, fifth place could also qualify depending on how English clubs fare in Europe this season.
Despite criticism aimed at Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca for his cautious approach in recent games, the Blues showed greater energy against Spurs. Following a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and a poor showing in a training match against their youth team, Maresca cancelled the players’ day off, demanding a response — which he got with a more spirited display.
Although Chelsea still lacked clinical finishing, they managed to hold on for their fifth win in six matches across all competitions, continuing a dominant run of form over Spurs, having lost only once in their last 13 league meetings.
For Tottenham, the defeat deepens their woes in what has been a disappointing season. Winless in their last four league games and with just one victory in six outings overall, Spurs are stuck in 14th place — their lowest standing since the 2003-04 season.
The pressure is mounting on Postecoglou, with fans voicing their anger, including chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” during the second half. Frustration has also been directed at club chairman Daniel Levy amid ongoing fan protests.
Tottenham’s only hope of ending a 17-year trophy drought now rests in the Europa League, where they face Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals.
Early Chances and Growing Frustration
Chelsea nearly opened the scoring inside the first minute when Nicolas Jackson’s shot was deflected onto the post following Trevoh Chalobah’s pass. Malo Gusto also came close with a powerful strike just wide of the target.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario had to react quickly to deny Fernandez from close range, and later produced an excellent save to tip over a curling shot from Jadon Sancho, who has been under scrutiny during his loan spell from Manchester United.
Tensions boiled over just before halftime when Cristian Romero shoved Levi Colwill, leading to a mass altercation. The incident appeared to ignite Chelsea, who finally broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half.
Cole Palmer delivered a pinpoint cross to Fernandez, who nodded in from five yards out.
Postecoglou responded with substitutions, bringing on Brenan Johnson and Pape Sarr, but the changes were met with mocking chants from frustrated Spurs supporters.
Sarr briefly looked to have equalised with a long-range effort in the 69th minute, but VAR ruled it out for a foul on Moises Caicedo in the build-up — prompting a visibly frustrated reaction from Postecoglou.
Tottenham came close again in the 89th minute when Son Heung-min’s close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Robert Sanchez, sealing Chelsea’s crucial win. — AFP
