WASHINGTON, April 18 — U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to soften his stance on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky yesterday, saying he does not hold him responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, though he continued to offer sharp criticism of the pro-Western leader.
KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — Malaysia is hopeful that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming state visit will pave the way for deeper bilateral ties and enhanced trade relations between both nations.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the visit is also expected to boost people-to-people connections between Malaysia and China.
“This is a great honour for Malaysia. I believe there are numerous opportunities for both sides to explore, build upon past successes, and chart new areas of cooperation,” he said during a doorstop session after attending the Asean-China Media and Think Tank Forum 2025 held here today.
The forum was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and attended by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and Xinhua News Agency’s Chief Editor Lyu Yansong, among others.
Earlier this week, Fahmi, who also serves as the spokesperson for the Madani Government, announced that Xi will undertake a three-day state visit to Malaysia starting April 15.
This will mark Xi’s second visit to Malaysia, following his first in October 2013, when both nations upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Calling China a key trade partner, Fahmi noted that with Malaysia chairing Asean this year, the timing is ideal for high-level discussions and deeper collaboration. He also expressed anticipation in welcoming the Chinese President.
On global geopolitical tensions, Fahmi reaffirmed Malaysia’s stance as an independent and sovereign nation that upholds its core principles and foreign policy positions.
“Malaysia has always maintained its own set of principles and policies in guiding international relations. We are committed to frameworks like ZOPFAN (Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality) and Asean, which continue to inform our approach,” he said.
He added that despite growing globalisation challenges, including recent tariff moves by US President Donald Trump, Malaysia remains steadfast in pursuing robust and diversified trade relations worldwide.
Also present at the Asean-China Media and Think Tank Forum 2025 were Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj.
Co-organised by Bernama and China’s Xinhua News Agency under the theme “Strengthening Asean-China Cooperation”, the forum attracted over 200 participants, including prominent media leaders, government officials, and experts from across Asean and China, aiming to foster deeper engagement within the dynamic media landscape. — Bernama
