MANDALAY, April 2 – A man was pulled alive from the rubble five days after Myanmar’s devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake, as calls grow for the junta to allow more aid and halt attacks on rebels.

The quake flattened buildings, killing over 2,700 people and leaving thousands homeless. Some armed groups have paused hostilities, but junta chief Min Aung Hlaing vowed to continue “defensive activities” against “terrorists.”

On Wednesday, a 26-year-old hotel worker was rescued in Naypyidaw by a Myanmar-Turkish team. Video showed him conscious but dazed as he was carried out.

The UN and rights groups urge all sides to prioritize aid. With communications down, the true toll is unclear, but over 4,500 are injured and 441 remain missing.

Rebel groups have declared temporary ceasefires, but junta airstrikes continue. Australia and Amnesty International condemned the attacks, warning they hinder relief efforts.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok, workers search for survivors in a collapsed 30-story skyscraper. The toll there has reached 22, with over 70 still trapped. — AFP
